Pizza From Mt. Vernon

No, I didn't go to Virginia. One of the many U.S. locations named Mt. Vernon is a small, unincorporated community located southwest of Madison, Wisconsin and it's home to the Mt. Vernon Tap. For 7+ years it was named Marcine's and known for its heavyweight pizza, and when it was sold a couple of years ago the new owners promised to leave things unchanged as much as possible.

I don't know the exact age of the building but it's definitely been around awhile.

Inside it's pretty simple, with a 3-sided bar and plenty of tables. It was occupied enough that I chose to skip the photo and also get my pizza to go.

It took a little over 30 minutes to get home and the pizza was still reasonably warm. While I'd never been to MVT or its predecessor I'd read and heard about the density and heft of their pizzas, and was not disappointed when I opened the box.

My selected toppings were sausage, mushrooms (canned, of course) and black olives. The pizza had plenty of them as well as cheese, making for a thick, heavy slice. Yet while more doesn't always mean better, this is actually a very good pizza.

Pizza purists and pizza minimalists probably wouldn't care for this kind of pizza, but that's OK. That leaves more for the rest of us.
