Have Map - Will Travel

Random restaurant, food and travel musings from someone completely unqualified to offer them

Thanks for stopping by!  I'm developing this blog as a way to share some of the food and travel-related experiences that I occasionally have.

Back in the 1950s and '60s the show "Have Gun - Will Travel" aired on both radio (starring John Dehner) and and television (Richard Boone).  Paladin was a semi-retired gunslinger who lived the life of a refined gentleman in the opulent Carlton Hotel in San Francisco, but nearly every week he'd hit the trail to help out an old friend, a damsel in distress, or even a complete stranger; hence, his personal card reading "Have Gun - Will Travel".  I especially enjoy the radio version and while I don't get to travel on a weekly basis (and no one has ever mistaken me for a refined gentleman) it doesn't take much for me to throw some maps, atlases and camera gear in the car and head off down the blue highways to see what's out there.  So come on along and I hope you enjoy the trip!

When It's In the Name It's What You Order

Case in point, The Chicken House outside of Sellersburg, Indiana. It had been on my radar for years and in August, 2025 I was finally able to visit. It was a Thursday and I got there just before it opened at 11am, and I'll bet there were at least 10 other cars already in the parking lot. Did I think to inquire about the history of the original house? No, I did not. Probably because I was laser-focused on stuffing my face. I was seated in the newer part of the restaurant.

A Creepy Stretch of Old US-41

Last August (2025) I was on the way to Ohio and checked out an abandoned segment of US Highway 41 south of Earl Park, Indiana. Here's the southbound view at the end. Oftentimes a road like this will have some sort of barrier or signage where it ends but that wasn't the case. The road just ends. That's current US-41 in the distance. Earl Park can be seen to the north. Not that it's a concern these days, but no passing. I did a little research and it appears the current vers
