Shrimp toast

Without a doubt, my favorite Chinese restaurant appetizer is shrimp toast. Even though the shrimp flavor is often fairly mild, shrimp toast is crunchy, salty and a little oily - 3 of my favorite characteristics of food! It does vary from restaurant to restaurant: some toasts are small while others are as large as a fast food hash brown patty, some are open-faced while others are like little sandwiches, etc.

But at least around here, shrimp toast shows up on a definite minority of menus. Egg rolls? Of course. Crab rangoons? We got 'em. But shrimp toast? Eh, maybe someplace else.

For me that someplace else is Peking Chinese Restaurant in Janesville, WI. Only 30 minutes from home, it's my go-to destination when I need a shrimp toast fix and one of my visits took place about 3 years ago.

The interior is appropriately dim.

I was lunching alone this day, so I started with some appetizers. Peking's version of shrimp toast is right in the center.

Mmmm...golden, delicious goodness!

But these were appetizers, and I needed an entree. So...

I need to go back to Peking soon!

I've heard of shrimp toast and we sure have lots of Chinese restaurants, but I on't believe I've ever seen it on a menu. I must pay better attention the next time I venture into one.
