When Dinner Goes Downhill

...it doesn't necessarily have to be a Bad Thing.

Edgewater Supper Club is located on County Road K between Fort Atkinson and Jefferson, WI. The building dates back to the 1930s and has a full-on buttload of rural supper club character (and is rightly included in one of Ron Faiola's "Wisconsin Supper Club" books), but the feature I like the most is the slanted floor out on the "porch". I don't know the story behind this architectural feature but to the owners' credit they've chosen to embrace rather than "fix" it, to the point where the water glasses actually have angled bases so they sit level.

When we first visited a few years back we were lucky enough to be seated at the table in the far outside corner (far right in the photo below), and thus got the Full Tilt (Boogie?) Experience. And as a bonus, dinner was exceptionally good.

The view from the corner. The original dining room is on the other side of the windows, and it includes a 2-table semi-private alcove next to the fireplace.

This wasn't the complete relish dish; I'm pretty sure I'd already eaten the good stuff by this point.

The bread that night was spectacularly good, with the red pepper flakes in the bottom crust adding a great burst of heat.

Outstanding prime rib. The next time we were there the nightly special was a strip loin roast prepared in the same manner and it was equally awesome.

We haven't been to Edgewater for a couple of years but have reservations for the Saturday before Christmas. We just need to decide who's sitting uphill and who's sitting downhill.

Maybe they need to rename this restaurant "The Slanted Table." I think I'd like to go here once, just to have "the slanted experience."

I just love the look of your restaurants. Nothing like the commercialized restaurants of the west coast. Homey, parking and I didn't see one cellphone. Do all of your restaurants have a relish plate? So different than anything out here,

Now... your dinner. Just WOW!

Thanks, Marlene! he relish tray/dish/plate is primarily a supper club tradition. A lot of restaurants have dropped them in favor of salad bars but there are still quite a few places that stick to the old ways. This was a pretty simple tray but sometimes they can be very impressive with options like multi-bean salad, herring, a couple of different cheese spreads, etc.
